Gut Health

What is Gut Health?

The gut refers to the Gastrointestinal (GI) Tract. It includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus. The three main functions of the gut are transportation, digestion and absorption of food. Besides these, it also has many other important functions like keeping harmful substances out of our bodies and cultivating useful bacteria. The gut is considered unhealthy if it fails to perform the above mentioned functions.

Usually, bacteria is thought of in a negative manner, but a healthy gut is filled with millions of different types of healthy bacteria. This bacteria helps in the absorption of nutrients, boosts the immune system, and also helps in the stimulation of the nervous system to function properly.

4 factors have greatly changed the gut flora in our system :

  • Increased consumption of industrialised foods

  • Widespread use of antibiotics

  • C-Section deliveries

  • Lack of breast-feeding

How is gut health linked to our immune system ?

The gut is actually an extremely important barrier between your body and the outside world. That's why you don't always get sick even when you swallow some bacteria in your food which you anyways do every day, because nothing is perfectly sterile. Your gut plays a huge role in the immune system, because it's the first line of defense between you and anything dangerous you might swallow.

The gut flora protects the immune system in a number of ways. These include the following:

  • They strengthen the physical defences of the gut wall.

  • They fight with the pathogens for space and food.

  • They control the inflammation and the response of the immune system towards the same.

  • They produce various antimicrobial substances. For example, one species produces an antibacterial substance that fights Gram-negative bacteria (gram-negative bacteria include E. coli, Salmonella, and several different types of bacteria that cause respiratory infections). The gut flora and the immune system go hand in hand. If something happens to one, it will affect the other.

"The intestinal microbiota helps in proper development of the host immune system, which in turn regulates the homeostasis of the microbiota."

How to identify a "Leaky Gut Syndrome"?

"Physicians don't know enough about the gut, which is our biggest immune system organ. From an MD's standpoint, it's a very gray area"

- Donald Kirkby, Gastroenterologist MD, Director of the Centre for Human Nutrition at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA.

Leaky gut, or "intestinal permeability," is a condition in which the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged thus causing undigested food particles, toxic waste products and bacteria to "leak" through the intestines and enter the blood stream.

The foreign substances that enter the blood stream are recognised by the body as "non self" & hence produce antibody agent in its own tissue which can cause an auto-immune response which includes inflammation and allergic reactions such as migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, eczema, chronic fatigue, food allergies, rheumatoid arthritis and more.

According to Dr. Leo Galland, Director of the Foundation for Integrated Medicine, the following symptoms might be signs of leaky gut:

  • Chronic diarrhoea, constipation, gas, bloating

  • Nutritional deficiencies

  • Poor immune system

  • Headaches, brain fog, memory loss, excessive fatigue

  • Skin rashes and problems such as acne, eczema or rosacea

  • Cravings for sugar or carbs

  • Arthritis or join pain

  • Depression, anxiety, ADD, ADHD Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, celiac disease or crohn's disease.

The Functional Approach to Leaky Gut

We have a unique gut repair program to heal the following gut disorders:

  • Chronic Constipation

  • Irritable bowel syndrome

  • Inflammatory bowel disease

  • GERD

GI disease treatment is based on the following four 'R's:

  • Remove foods and other factors that damage the Gut

  • Replace with Healing Foods

  • Repair with Healing Supplements

  • Rebalance with Probiotics

Treatment Options - The Functional Medicine Way

Food allergy identification, elimination and rebuilding the gut flora

A food allergy reaction occurs when your immune system overreacts to a food or a substance in a food, identifying it as a danger and triggering a protective response. Food allergy reactions can be low grade to life-threatening, which shows the importance of knowing the symptoms. They can range from skin rashes, diarrhoea, dizziness to severe gut related issues. It is very important to know your food allergies for healthy living.

Colon hydrotherapy and Enemas

Colon Hydrotherapy is the gentle rinsing of the colon with warm water, to remove encrusted fecal matter, gas and mucus. This allows vital nutrients to be absorbed more easily and leaves you feeling rejuvenated and healthier. Colonics cleanses the colon and rebalances the gut microbiome. Colon hydrotherapy involves the safe, gentle infusion of water into the colon via the rectum. No chemicals or drugs are involved, and the entire therapy is relaxing and effective. An enema is the injection of fluid into the lower bowel through the rectum. Enemas have been used since centuries to treat constipation, bowel issues, and to cleanse their colon. The benefits range from improving circulation, boosting energy, losing weight, clearing the skin, detoxing the liver, etc.

ONDAMED

ONDAMED is a device that produces a highly focused pulsed electromagnetic field that penetrates deep into a targeted region of the body to painlessly stimulate tissues and "jump start" cellular activities. Humans are electromagnetic beings and are receptive to electromagnetic vibrations. ONDAMED stimulation induces subtle current impulses in the body's fluids, organs, tissue, and cells.

Personalised Nutritional Program

Personalised nutrition is groundbreaking since it is based on the fact that eating plans aren't one-size-fits-all. A diet works best for you if it is based on your specific and unique nutrient requirements as an individual.
